Practical lessons from the 2024 European Risk Prevention Tour

It’s just over a year on from the launch of the award-winning European FM Risk Prevention Truck Tour at the 2023 Airmic conference in Manchester. Bringing the latest insights and proactive risk mitigation techniques from the FM Research Campus in Rhode Island, USA, to organisations across the continent, in its inaugural year the truck has visited some of our biggest clients, most valued brokers and trusted partners, along with attending industry events.

With interactive displays, research and product demos, we’re helping guests to contextualise the realities of risk to inform proactive action and broaden awareness of the imperative to enhance business resilience.

Here, we’ll look at three key areas of focus for the Risk Prevention Tour to outline how FM enables clients to see, prevent, and mitigate risks to a business’ continuity, property, people, and reputation.

1. Implement solutions to minimise fire risk

The FM Risk Prevention Truck features a dedicated fire protection area to highlight how the right FM Approved measures can protect your business from the worst impacts of fires and minimise potential business losses.

Every piece of fire protection equipment on display has been tested exhaustively at the FM Research Campus – from the fire suppression systems to the mains valves, to the ignitable liquid storage units.

Through our research, we’ve created practical solutions to prevent, suppress, and extinguish fires. Implementing the right ones is a crucial first step on the road to resilience. But to maximise resilience, you must also understand the specific risks present at each facility and take proactive steps to manage them.

That’s why the Risk Prevention Truck also features interactive displays dedicated to ignitable liquid storage, showcasing proven solutions for avoiding spillages and preventing pool fires. Our team also highlights best practice for fire control valve inspections and maintenance, underscoring the need for regular inspections to ensure mains valves and other critical infrastructure are properly maintained.

2. Install effective flood defences

Many companies feel like the impacts of climate change on their operations are out of their hands. We designed the flood resilience area of the FM Risk Prevention Truck to show that this is not the case. There’s a host of simple and effective solutions available that can mitigate the risk when waters start to rise.

First, Risk Prevention Truck visitors can discover which of their business locations may be susceptible to flooding with the FM Flood Map.

The truck’s interactive flood table then challenges visitors to protect an example facility from rising water using miniature versions of FM Approved flood barriers – highlighting just how impactful a few well-placed defences can be.

Our expert team can also demonstrate full-size examples of doorway barriers and other flood protection solutions, so people can see how easy they are to install and deploy in the event of a flood.

This installation is just one of the ways we combine in-context insight with practical solutions to help businesses build resilience proactively in an evolving risk landscape.

3. Adopt resilient construction and design processes

FM’s science-backed research and engineering-led approach can also help to maximise your business’ resilience against high winds, storms, hail, and earthquakes. Clients routinely partner with us to ensure they’re using best practice construction materials and techniques across their facilities.

This often starts with a site visit from an FM engineer to identify any foreseeable risks present at a facility and make recommendations about how to mitigate them. Our Plan Review team also plays a pivotal role in ensuring any planned works incorporate the right loss prevention measures and construction materials.

We give visitors of the Risk Prevention Truck a taste of this expertise in our “building assemblies” area, where visitors can browse a range of FM Approved roof assemblies to discover their ratings for durability against fire, wind, and hail.

Ensuring that buildings in at-risk areas are built using FM Approved materials is essential for ensuring their resilience. You can explore more ways to improve your organisation’s earthquake preparedness here.
